A Brief Guide to Bowling Rules

  • 10 pins arranged in a triangle
  • The balls have exactly the same diameter but different weights (8–16 pounds)
  • Solid balls with three holes—ebonite or reactive with an eccentric core
  • A player may play with his own ball
  • You must wear special bowling shoes

The game consists of ten rounds (frames). In each frame, each bowler takes two turns, unless they achieve a “strike” or a “spare.” If a bowler achieves a “strike” or a “spare” in the tenth frame, they take three turns.

The results of each frame in a bowling game are displayed on the screen in the first row, and the total score for each frame is displayed in the second row.

What is a "strike"?

A "strike" occurs when a player knocks down all the pins with their first throw. A "strike" is worth 10 points plus the number of pins the player knocks down in the next two throws.

What does “double” mean?

Two consecutive "strikes" are called a "double." For the first "strike," the player receives 20 points plus the number of pins the player knocks down on the first throw following the second "strike."

"Triple" is not "double"

A "triple" consists of three consecutive "strikes." The first "strike" is worth 30 points. To achieve the maximum score of 300 points, a player must throw 12 consecutive "strikes."

"Spare," or a spare

If, on the second throw of a frame, a player knocks down all the pins that remained standing after the first throw, a “spare” is scored. For a “spare,” the player earns 10 points plus the number of pins knocked down on the next throw.

"Missed Shot"

A "no-strike" is the term used to describe a situation in which a player fails to knock down all ten pins in two throws during a frame, and the pins remaining after the first throw do not form a "split."

"Split," or the Pin Formation

"Split" refers to a situation in which, after the first throw, the pins remain standing in such a formation that the head pin is knocked down, and in addition:

  1. at least one pin is knocked down between two or more standing pins, e.g., 7–9 or 3–10;
  2. At least one pin is knocked down immediately in front of two or more standing pins, e.g., 5–6.
