Luhačovice Under the Scientists’ Microscope — Theses and Research

A Town That Attracts More Than Just Tourists

Luhačovice is known as a spa town, but few people realize how much attention it also receives from scientists and college students. A number of master’s and bachelor’s theses have been written at Czech universities that examine Luhačovice from a wide variety of angles—from the geology of mineral springs to the medieval history of the estate, and from architecture to tourism. Here is an overview of the seven most interesting theses that can enrich anyone who wants to get to know Luhačovice more deeply.

1. Economic Development of the Luhačovice Estate in the 17th Century

Author: Michaela Varaďová · Year: 2017 · Type: Master’s thesis, Masaryk University, Faculty of Education

The most important work for understanding the earliest inhabitants of Luhačovice. Varaďová analyzes the land registers from 1640, 1656–1659, and 1664, supplemented by the land register from 1670. Thanks to her work, we know the names of dozens of serf families, their obligations, and their economic circumstances on the estate during the Thirty Years’ War and immediately afterward.

2. The Luhačovice Zálesí Region — Historical Context

Author: Michaela Varaďová · Year: 2015 · Type: Bachelor’s thesis, Masaryk University, Faculty of Education

An earlier work by the same author, devoted to the origins and development of the Luhačovice estate in the context of the Luhačovice Zálesí micro-region. It examines the relationship between the town and the surrounding villages and the formation of regional identity—a theme also explored in Antonín Václavík’s monograph.

3. Architectural History of the Luhačovice Spa, 1902–1948

Author: Radim Silný · Year: 2007 · Type: Master’s thesis, Masaryk University, Faculty of Arts

A detailed analysis of the construction activities of the Luhačovice Spa Joint-Stock Company since its founding in 1902. The thesis charts the golden age of spa architecture—from the brief but intense influence of architect Dušan Jurkovič (1902–1903) through the construction of the Bedřich Smetana House by Emil Králík (1908–09) to the interwar period. Essential reading for anyone who admires Luhačovice’s architecture.

4. Everyday Life in Luhačovice 1939–1945

Author: Michal Heinrich · Year: 2013 · Type: Master’s thesis, Masaryk University, Faculty of Arts

What was everyday life like in the spa town during the Protectorate? Heinrich examines the impact of the occupation on the daily reality of the inhabitants—supply chains, cultural life, restrictions on movement, and the fates of local Jewish families. The thesis offers a view of history “from below,” through the eyes of ordinary people rather than major events.
