Fear of the unknown and uncertainty. Such feelings were experienced in Luhačovice Spa in the first "covid" year 2020. At that time, the attendance was plummeting, revenues were volatile and the spa even had to close for a few weeks. After a brief summer recovery came another wave and a series of restrictions that negatively impacted the spa's operations.
"In early 2021, our spa found a natural role in fighting the pandemic. They became a place for rehabilitation and treatment of post-covid patients and later exhausted health workers started to come to us for convalescent stays," says the general director of Luhačovice Spa Jiří Dědek.
In both years, the spa experienced a decline in pediatric patients treated for respiratory illnesses in Luhačovice, and a significant drop in foreign guests as well. "On the other hand, the interest of Czechs in health and prevention has increased," added Dědek.
One of the first post-covid patients to come to Luhačovice Spa for treatment in January 2021 was Mr. Jan Procházka, who ended up in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Prague's Thomayer Hospital, on oxygen due to a severe case of covid. "After returning home from the hospital, I continued to be so weak that I could barely walk to the toilet a few metres from the bed. When I was checked by a pulmonary doctor, she recommended that I finish my treatment at the spa in Luhačovice," Jan Procházka says.
At the spa, Jan Procházka underwent inhalations, carbon dioxide baths, breathing exercises and rehabilitation in the form of walks in the fresh air. Today, more than a year after the spa treatment, he is doing well. "My pulmonary doctor told me about three quarters of a year after my stay in the spa that my lungs no longer show any visible damage, so there is no need for further check-ups. In my opinion, it was mainly the early spa treatment that helped me," thinks Jan Procházka.
Patients come to the spa after having a cavida mainly because they have difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, a persistent cough, persistent impaired taste and smell, fatigue, muscle pain, impaired concentration, insomnia and overall poor health."We use the best practices common in respiratory diseases and, of course, our experience in treating these diseases to treat them," states the chief physician of the Luhačovice spa Jiří Hnátek.
The most important procedures for post-covid patients include inhalation with natural mineral water. "This dissolves mucus in the airways and at the same time soothes the inflamed mucous membrane. It is also a range of physiotherapy methods, in which we exercise or train breathing gymnastics with clients. The result of treatment in our clinic is in most cases an improvement in physical condition and may also improve the functional capacity of the lungs," continues Hnátek.
His words are confirmed by Mrs. Vladimíra Zacharová, who was treated in Luhacovice in January after covid-19. "Shortness of breath and great weakness. These problems accompanied me for a month after I was discharged from the hospital, where I ended up after 14 days of home treatment with covid, because the disease had created a severe pneumonia, which they had to help me with in the hospital. I feel that the inhalations in particular helped me. After about a week I started to feel better," says Vladimíra Zacharová.
Natural mineral waters are not only beneficial for adults. "Even children, although in smaller numbers than adults, are undergoing treatment after a covid. The treatment procedures are practically the same as for adults - inhalation therapy, physical therapy and breathing rehabilitation," concluded Jiří Hnátek.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre
The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
