A parade of masquerades, bear-baiting, liquid and solid delicacies, what the throat can handle... in short, general unbridled merriment before the upcoming forty-day fast, as it should be. All of this will be on offer at the Mardi Gras fair in the centre of the spa town this Saturday, February 26.
The Mardi Gras festival will begin in the morning with a traditional tour of the town in traditional and non-traditional masks, with stops at individual houses where the skakun will dance the sabre dance and the bear will dance with the housekeeper. The parade will start from the chateau, from where it will go to the Home for the Elderly, then through Družstevní, Ludkovická, V Drahách, Hrazanská, Slunná, Nádražní, Masarykova streets to the Luhačovice Town Hall, from where the route will lead to the local sokolovna.
Lovers of carnival traditions can visit the thematic exhibition Masks, costumes, masquerades, which will be on display throughout the day in the Museum of the Luhačovice Woods. The exhibition shows how masked parades and processions in southeastern Moravia have changed over time through numerous photographs, artworks and other material documents.
A Saturday day of exuberant merriment can end at a more leisurely pace in the Elektra Cinema, which will present the romantic ballet Romeo and Juliet performed by the Royal Opera Orchestra from 6 pm on a movie screen. In Sergei Prokofiev's classic work, the ill-fated lovers attempt to escape Renaissance Verona, where the bustle of the marketplace all too easily turns into a sword fight and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montague and Capulet families.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre
The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
