After a two-year hiatus, the 29th annual Janáček and Luhačovice Festival was officially opened on Monday 11 July. Until Friday, July 15, it will offer unforgettable artistic concert experiences and commemorate the personality of Leoš Janáček, who often visited Luhačovice. On the first night of the festival, Mozart's most famous opera The Marriage of Figaro was performed directly on the Spa Square.
The opening of the festival at the bust of Leoš Janáček was attended by Mrs Livia Klausová, the Governor of the Zlín Region Radim Holiš and other guests of honour. There was also the traditional festive fanfare of Janáček's Sinfonietta performed by the Zlín Brass Harmony.
The evening was devoted to the comic opera Le nozze di Figaro, as its Italian title goes, performed by the opera ensemble, orchestra and ballet of the Silesian Theatre Opava under the baton of Vojtěch Spurný. "Despite a few minutes of interruption caused by a rain shower, the whole opera was performed. Shortly before eleven o'clock the performance ended and the audience rewarded the performers with a long-lasting applause," said Hana Felcmanová, cultural manager of the Luhačovice Spa.
One of the most performed operas in history and today, which premiered 236 years ago in Vienna, was directed by Jana Andělová Pletichová. The Opava Opera Company is a regular guest of the Luhačovice Festival. In the past, it has presented three operas, which have always met with great success.
The following days will feature performances by the Moyzes Quartet, the Mucha Quartet, the Czech Ensemble Baroque, the Danaj dulcimer ensemble, the PhilHarmonia Octet Prague, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra from Zlín and the Lúčnica choir.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre
The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
