Home for the elderly Luhačovice reports a calm situation

While some homes for the elderly in various parts of the country are acutely struggling with coronavirus infection among clients or staff, the situation in the Luhačovice facility is calm.

"We do not have any incidence of coronavirus among our clients or staff, and at this moment we do not have any of our employees under home quarantine or on the so-called "emergency room", so our facility is not short of staff," said Marie Semelová, director of the Luhačovice Home for the Elderly, before noon on 30 March.

The Luhačovice home is also subject to new government regulations aimed at residential social services facilities. "Of course, there is still a strict ban on visitors, on entering the premises, clients' temperatures are regularly taken several times a day, they have to stay in their rooms, and group activities have also been abolished by government decree," Semelová said.

She added that the home is fortunately not struggling with an acute shortage of protective equipment.

"We receive drapes sewn by volunteers from the town, we received a shipment of protective equipment from the Zlín Region over the weekend, and we received special drapes with replaceable nanofilters as a gift from Korunka Luhačovice. We are thus secured for several days ahead. I must also thank all the other donors who donate supplies, food, books and other items." added the director.

The new regulation regarding the homes also addresses what to do if a facility becomes infected with COVID-19. The homes are required to set aside one-tenth of the capacity for infected clients to be in isolation if possible. However, this is only possible in some cases, depending on how large the facility is and how it is structurally designed. "In our facility, however, this is not feasible because, for example, we cannot provide for the relocation of beds, a changing room, enough space for client care, and the location of care equipment. It is also not possible because of the location of toilets, bathrooms, among other things, which could not be specially allocated for clients in isolation. Therefore, if a coronavirus infection were to occur, we would have to arrange for the transfer of patients elsewhere," Semelová noted. But she added that she hopes the situation will remain calm and the facility will not have to deal with such a situation.
