"Hush, boys, hush, the carnival is over, the carnival is coming to an end, it's not coming back!" Those are the exclamations that will be heard by all those who will head to Luhačovice on Saturday, February 10, where the traditional Mardi Gras feast will be held. The popular event will begin with a fancy dress parade performed by the Malé Zálesí Folklore Ensemble, whose members will begin by asking the mayor himself for permission to hold a carnival, who will then take control of the town.

Visitors to the carnival can look forward to dancing with a bear, a sabre dance performed by skakuns and there will also be a wide range of killing specialities, cakes and other goodies at the fair in front of the post office, which will take place from 10am to 5pm.

After a few years of forced pause caused by the covida pandemic and the reconstruction of the Sokolovna premises, the tradition of burying the bass will return to Luhačovice again this year. The parade of masks, which symbolically escort and bury the mother bass at the end of the Mardi Gras, together with dancing, a peculiar litany of the "parish priest", dulcimer music and a rich raffle will take place in the Sokolka Club on Tuesday, February 13.

"In Luhačovice we keep the tradition that the burial of the bass falls on Mardi Gras Tuesday. We know that moving it to the weekend may look tempting, but we believe that some traditions are just meant to be kept. I hope that people will find their way to this feast even in the middle of the working week," says František Dostálek, chairman of the Luhačovice Ski Club, which organizes the event.

The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core.
