Luhačovice honoured the memory of Milada Horáková by raising the black flag

A black flag flew over the Luhačovice town hall. The town commemorates the memory of JUDr. Milada Horáková, who was sentenced to death 70 years ago in a trial engineered by the communist regime and subsequently executed. Horáková was a First Republic lawyer and an active politician, a fighter for freedom and women's rights, and in the post-war period also a member of parliament.

After the German occupation, she was active in the anti-fascist resistance and did not give up her stance on freedom and democracy even after the fascist dictatorship was replaced by the communist one. This unfortunately proved fatal for her. In a highly publicised monster trial in 1950, she was accused, along with others, of conspiracy against the state. During the staged trial, she defended herself against charges of treason and espionage. Unlike many of those so tried, however, she did not admit her guilt and maintained that she had done nothing wrong. Nevertheless, she was sentenced to death, which was carried out early in the morning of 27 June 1950 in Pankrác Prison. The sentence of the State Court of 8 June 1950 was already revoked during the period of the relaxation of conditions in 1968. Due to the subsequent occupation by the Warsaw Pact troops and the subsequent advent of so-called normalisation, the trial was not resumed. M. Horáková was thus not fully rehabilitated until 1990. The following year, she was awarded the Order of T. G. Masaryk, First Class, for her services to democracy and human rights in memoriam. On the day of her execution, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Communist Regime."

"It is necessary to constantly remember the story of Milada Horáková as one of the greatest personalities of the fight for freedom, who became a symbol of the fight against injustice and bravely managed to face the totalitarian regime," said Marian Ležák, the mayor of Luhačovice.
