Luhačovice Opening of the springs is postponed

The state of emergency associated with the ban on gatherings and public events also affects the traditional Opening of the Springs, which opens the spa season in Luhačovice every year on the second weekend in May. The popular festival, which regularly attracts thousands of visitors, will not take place on the planned date.

"The three-day programmes, which took more than a year to prepare, cannot take place on 8-10 May due to the current situation. Due to the nature of the event, it is not yet possible to set an alternative date," Hana Slováková, director of the Elektra Municipal House of Culture, explained on behalf of the organizers.

The event, organized by the city in cooperation with a number of partners, was to offer a rich program this year, including not only the parade itself with the dedication of the springs, but also a number of cultural performances, a fair, a parade of vintage cars, promenades in historical costumes and many other accompanying events. Although the original Opening of the Springs program is being cancelled, organizers intend to keep at least the basics of the event this year. "I am confident that we will be able to open and bless the springs in at least some form this summer. The modern tradition of blessing the springs, revived by the Malé Zálesí folklore ensemble at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, has not yet been interrupted. We would therefore like to preserve it this year as well," Slováková added.

The organisers do not want to speculate on the exact form or possible date, because no one knows how long the current strict measures will be in place. Even if they are replaced by slightly more lenient ones, such as allowing events up to a certain number of participants, organising the Opening of the Springs will not be easy. Indeed, the main parade and most of the other usual programmes normally take place in public spaces where it is impossible to determine the exact number of visitors at any given time. Another issue would be the possibility of the participation of performers at a possible alternative date.

The mayor of the town Marian Ležák confirms that the general public will not miss the opening ceremony of the spa season in Luhačovice.

"I firmly believe that the situation will change as soon as possible so that people will be able to come to us again for medical stays and relaxation. I am an optimist and I cannot imagine that this year we will not prepare the traditional Opening of the Springs in some form. We know from the many responses from citizens and visitors alike how much everyone looks forward to this event. " concluded Ležák.
