Local genius loci

The aim of the competition is to highlight the most outstanding innovative approaches that enrich the genius loci and unique atmosphere of spa places. The jury, consisting of representatives of CzechTourism, the Association of Spa Places of the Czech Republic and other experts, evaluated in particular innovation, quality of design, ecological approach, impact on public space and contribution to the promotion of the destination.

"We had no idea that we would win, but we knew that we were sending a very high quality project to the competition. This is recognition and confirmation that our vision for the revival of Sunny Baths was correct. It is an award for the whole team involved in the restoration - from the architect and author of the project, the contractor to the joint stock company Lázně Luhačovice, which is the owner of the site and the investor of the award-winning restoration," said the director of Slunečné lázně Hana Felcmanová.

"I think the combination of respect for the historical value of the building and the legacy of our predecessors played a key role. Our efforts to preserve the original character of Jurkovič's unique architecture while restoring social and cultural life to this magical place have been hailed as an example of sensitive and thoughtful reconstruction. The project's contribution to the public realm was also an important factor," added Felcman.

The extensive renovation cost $150 million

The restored grounds of the Luhačovice Water Treatment Institute and Sun Spa were created by reconstructing disused spa buildings and now serve as a unique testament to the spa industry and cultural atmosphere of the early 20th century. The reconstruction of the complex took place between 2021 and 2024. The total investment exceeded CZK 150 million, of which approximately CZK 70 million was covered by subsidies, the rest was financed by the Luhačovice Spa.

The restoration project was prepared by architect Petr Všetečka. At the heart of the restoration is the building of the Water Treatment Institute with an exhibition dedicated to the history of the place, the work of Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič and the relationship of the composer Leoš Janáček to Luhačovice.

Fourteen projects fought for the victory

The competition in its first year attracted a total of fourteen contestants from a wide range of projects from different spa locations. The projects focused on revitalizing public spaces, historic sites, developing nature-friendly landscape implementations, or upgrading spa infrastructure.

"We are pleased with the quality and imaginative nature of the projects submitted by the participants. It shows that spa venues are not only preserving their tradition, but also looking for new ways to appeal to the modern visitor," said Jan Trejbal, chairman of the Spa Inspiration 2025 jury.

Along with the award, Luhačovice Spa also received financial support of 100,000 crowns, which will be used for further improvement of the Sun Spa area.
