River nutria have multiplied on the river Štiavnica in Luhačovice. This species of rodent attracts especially parents with children, who often pet and feed it. However, the Luhačovice town hall appeals to the public not to do so. The increasing number of nutria is highly undesirable.

The river otter is a non-native species and its presence, not only in the Czech Republic, is undesirable. Its homeland is South America. Nutria are displacing native species in our area, disturbing the banks and dams of streams and reservoirs by building burrows and transmitting disease.
Nutria have no natural enemies and are characterized by their high abundance. The feeding of the animals by the public, which has recently been occurring especially at the Luhacovice river, contributes to this. The town therefore urges residents not to feed or touch the nutria.
Veterinarians warn that nutria can even attack humans when they feel threatened. It is the bite that can then cause a bacterial infection. "Sometimes this appeal is met with criticism from the public who are not familiar with the issue, but this is all about prevention. The cute animals have become accustomed to the public and are an attraction for parents with children who feed them," pointed out Luhačovice spokeswoman Hana Srncová.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre
The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
