Night strong wind and rain hit the Zlín region mainly in the Zlín, Uherské Hradiště and Vsetín regions. On the other hand, the Kromeriz region was the least affected. During the night and this morning, firefighters recorded around 300 incidents. Most of them are technical assistance in removing fallen trees on the roads.
In the Zlín Region, the worst situation is in Luhačovice, where a violent storm swept through overnight, hitting mainly the city centre. Fortunately, no one was injured. The greatest damage was caused to the building of the Youth Home of the Secondary Vocational School in Luhačovice, from where students had to be evacuated during the night. Due to the collapse of a part of the roof of the dormitory, Masarykova Street was completely impassable for several hours.
"From the first minutes, the city has been dealing with the situation in cooperation with the emergency services, thank you very much, especially to the professional and volunteer firefighters from all over the area who have been helping to remove the damage since the night hours. There was also a safety council in the morning hours, where a strategic procedure was set so that the damage is removed as quickly as possible," Mayor Marian Ležák added to the situation.
The roofs of family and prefabricated houses were destroyed, the affected roofs and fallen trees are counted in dozens. Firefighters are dealing with the storm's aftermath on Masaryk Street, and fallen trees have also vandalized some parked cars in other parts of the city. The outage of part of the telephone network and electricity also contributed negatively to the complexity of the situation. Damage repair in the heavily affected localities is continuing intensively. "The situation is being gradually stabilised in cooperation with the fire brigade and is being further addressed with the help of heavy equipment. The most affected areas are fenced off with tape and we ask the public not to enter them for safety reasons," adds Marian Ležák.
The area around the Luhačovice spa was not affected by the devastating storm and no complications have been reported. Therefore, tourists and locals need not be afraid and can visit the site without fear.
