Thanks to volunteers, the city provides blankets for the most needy

The town of Luhačovice has been able to solve the general lack of protective equipment thanks to volunteers, or rather volunteers who got involved in sewing the drapes.

"In Luhacovice you can see the synergy and I thank everyone who participated. Through the Elektra Municipal House of Culture, we are keeping and distributing these drapes. We have already provided the drapes to the Albert and Penny market food stores as well as to the Benzina petrol station. We have also given them protective gloves, of which we have enough for the most needy," informed the mayor of Luhačovice Marian Ležák.

Distribution of more drapes will follow.

"They will also be given as soon as possible to the workers at the post office and the employees of the municipal office, which has opening hours for the public tomorrow. By then, the drapes will have been provided for the office. I would like to point out that all those who come to the office to attend to their necessary business will also be asked to cover their noses and mouths with a veil. Alternatively, if they do not have a veil, they can use a scarf or similar to protect themselves," the mayor added.

He also gave an update on the coronavirus epidemic, which so far has been more than favourable for Luhačovice. "As of 10:00 today, there are no reported cases in the Luhacovice ORP. If we want to keep the town free of the disease, it is necessary that people wear masks in public or protect their mouths and noses in a similar way," the Mayor pointed out.

Volunteers are not only involved in the production of the masks, but the town organizes the provision of materials for the production in cooperation with hoteliers. "In fact, classic cotton sheets or bed sheets are the ideal material. Thank you to everyone who has already offered or continues to provide it," added Lezak.

"I am proud of the number of people who have signed up to make the drapes. Of course, we welcome more interested parties," the mayor added.

Information on the sewing and distribution of the drapes was added by Hana Slováková, director of MDK Elektra. "Today during the morning we handed over the first 80 drapes to the shops, and in the afternoon we are expecting more drapes to be sewn, which will go to doctors' offices. We are still looking for volunteers willing to sew. We will make the pattern available to them. I expect that tomorrow we will have an even larger quantity available and gradually we will cover the needs of everyone who has to be in public," Slováková said.

The cotton drapes are reusable, but they need to be boiled at least once a day. For now, the drapes are being distributed by City Police officers, who were equipped with them yesterday. The more people who participate in the sewing process, the sooner these protective devices will be available to others.

"People who want to participate in the production of the drapes, please contact the information centre or me directly," concluded Slováková.

The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
