A total of 62 buildings were entered in this year's competition, of which 18 competed in the category of Civic Amenities. This makes this year's competition the strongest entry in the last 22 years.

"I am very appreciative of this award, I see it as a great appreciation of the work of my colleagues, the contractor, the architect and all the authorities concerned. I believe that the Sun Spa area will become a new attraction for visiting Luhačovice. The main goal of the restoration of the Water Treatment Institute and the River and Sun Baths was to save the exceptional architectural work of Dušan Jurkovič," said Jiří Dědek, General Director of Luhačovice Spa.

The renovated area of the Sun Baths was created by reconstructing unused spa buildings and now serves as a unique testament to the spa industry and cultural atmosphere of the early 20th century. At the heart of the complex is the restored building of the Water Treatment Institute with an exhibition dedicated to the history of the place, the work of Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič and the relationship of the composer Leoš Janáček to Luhačovice.

The main tour route is dominated by the restored Jurkovič's Rest Room equipped with replicas of the original furnishings from 1902. The second floor is devoted to Leoš Janáček and his work, with the possibility of listening to musical examples, including a television recording of the Glagolitic Mass.

The former swimming pool and cabanas were functional until 1995. After renovation, the pool is no longer used for swimming, but an ornamental habitat has been created. The whole area has the ambition to become another tourist attraction of Luhačovice.

"In addition to the standard visitor use, it should provide an ideal background for cultural events for adults and children, thematic days and exhibitions," adds Hana Felcmanová, director of Slunečné lázně.

The renovation took place between 2021 and 2024 and included the restoration of the Water Treatment Institute, River and Sun Baths, Sulphur and Peat Baths and other technical buildings. The total investment exceeded 150 million crowns, of which approximately 70 million was covered by subsidies.

Luhačovice also fared well in the category of Implementation of projects of towns and villages, where the main prize went to the reconstruction of the Sokol Hall.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre

The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
