The renovated area of the Sun Baths in Luhačovice, which was created by reconstructing unused spa buildings, will soon serve as a unique document of the spa and cultural atmosphere of the early 20th century. Even after the reconstruction, the unique mood of the spa's heyday has been preserved throughout the complex.

"The main goal of the restoration of the Water Treatment Institute and the River and Sun Baths was to save the exceptional architectural work of Dušan Jurkovič. Already now guests can visit the museum exhibition and soon we will open the whole complex. The last weekend in May will be the opening ceremony of the Sun Season with a programme for the public," said Jiří Dědek, General Director of Luhačovice Spa.

The heart of the Sun Spa is the restored building of the Water Treatment Institute with an exhibition dedicated to the history of the place, the work of Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič and the relationship of composer Leoš Janáček to Luhačovice.

"The main tour route is dominated by Jurkovič's well-restored Rest Room, equipped with replicas of the original furnishings from 1902. There are also artifacts from the original mill on the site of which the Water Treatment Institute was built, as well as an authentic model showing the appearance of the complex from 1910," added Hana Felcmanová, director of the Sun Spa.

The second floor is devoted to Leoš Janáček and his work, with the opportunity to listen to musical selections, including a televised recording of the Glagolitic Mass.

"Visitors are free to wander the monument, lingering at any point for any length of time. A guided tour can be arranged if desired." Felcman continued.

The former swimming pool and cabanas adjacent to the Water Treatment Institute was functional until 1995, when it stopped meeting health codes. "After the renovation, the pool will no longer be used for swimming, but an ornamental habitat is being created," mentioned the director of the Sun Baths.

The Water Treatment Institute and the Sun Baths are cultural monuments. The former Hydrotherapy building is also on the indicative list of proposals for a National Heritage Site. The whole site has the ambition to become another tourist attraction in Luhačovice for generations to come.

"In addition to its standard visitor use, it should provide an ideal venue for cultural events for adults and children, themed days and exhibitions. We are cooperating with the Museum of Southeast Moravia in Zlín on these, among others." added Hana Felcmanová.

The reconstruction of the Sun Baths cost more than 150 million crowns. Approximately 70 million was covered by a grant from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme, the rest was financed by the joint stock company Lázně Luhačovice.

Luhačovice wants to protect its historical centre

The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
