The restored premises of the Water Treatment Institute and Sun Spa in Luhačovice were created by reconstructing unused spa buildings and now serve as a unique document of the spa and cultural atmosphere of the early 20th century.
"This complex, originally built by architect Dušan Jurkovič at the beginning of the 20th century, has undergone a demanding restoration that has sensitively respected its historical value while bringing it closer to contemporary visitors," said Dalibor Chrastina, marketing manager of Lázně Luhačovice.
The heart of the Sun Spa is the restored building of the Water Treatment Institute with an exhibition dedicated to the history of the place, the work of Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič and the relationship of the composer Leoš Janáček to Luhačovice.
"The award is a great recognition for us and a confirmation that our vision for the revival of the Sun Baths was correct. It is an award for the whole team - from the architect and author of the project to the contractor and the joint stock company Lázně Luhačovice, which is the owner of the site and the investor of this renovation. Respect for the historical value of the building and the legacy of our predecessors played a key role. Our aim was to preserve the original character of Jurkovič's architecture and at the same time to bring back social and cultural life to this exceptional place," said Eduard Bláha, Chairman of the Board of Lázně Luhačovice.
The Museum of Southeast Moravia in Zlín, through the Museum of the Luhačovice Woods, is involved in the creation of the part of the exhibition focused on short-term exhibitions.
"Thanks to them, visitors can regularly discover new stories and themes in the Sun Baths - for example, about the Luhačovice Air Navigation, Bedřich Smetana or the history of spa treatment. In addition to the exhibitions, they also organize thematic lectures that enrich the cultural offer of the Sun Baths," added Hana Felcmanová, director of the Sun Baths.
The renovation of the complex took place between 2021 and 2024. The total investment exceeded 150 million crowns, of which approximately 70 million are IROP subsidies. The remaining part was financed by Lázně Luhačovice.

The town of Luhačovice is planning a building closure in the area of the historic core. The measure is intended to temporarily protect architecturally valuable sites from unregulated construction until the new zoning plan comes into force. The building closure is to apply to the spa colonnade or Jurkovič Avenue towards the Luhačovice dam. In other locations, on the other hand, the city is ready to support new construction.
