"Last year, the Tibetan flag was raised for the first time, this year we are continuing it, it is an act of our support for freedom," said Mayor Marian Ležák.

The international Flag for Tibet campaign not only draws attention to the ongoing occupation of Tibet, but also commemorates the anniversary of the uprising against it there. This year marks 61 years since the bloody uprising, in which at least 80,000 Tibetans died and more than a million subsequently died in prisons, labour camps or as a result of famine. Western Europe has been drawing attention to human rights violations in Tibet by flying the Tibetan flag since the mid-1990s. The Czech Republic joined the campaign in 1996. Luhačovice joined the campaign last year following a decision by the new town council. This year, the town's leadership expressed its support for freedom and democracy in the same way.
